Successful silage fermentation starts long before the pit is filled. To achieve good preservation, farmers need to know both the readily fermentable sugar content and the nitrate levels in grass at the time of ensiling. Higher sugar content gives lactic acid-producing bacteria the fuel they need to quickly drop the pH and lock in nutrients for winter feeding, while high nitrate levels can slow fermentation and increase buffering capacity. Teagasc research highlights that a sugar level of 3 % or above is a key target for good fermentation and that understanding nitrate status helps avoid fermentation challenges linked to recent fertilizer applications or rapid grass growth.
