The first feed a newborn calf receives determines its health - calves are born without antibodies so quality colostrum is essential. A trusted tool like our Colostrum Refractometer lets you quickly and accurately measure colostrum quality before feeding.

WHY USE A COLOSTRUM REFRACTOMETER

The quality of colostrum is measured by the concentration of antibodies.
Calves must consume a high level of these in the first hours of life.
Good quality colostrum has an IgG concentration of greater than 50g/L.
Can you tell this by looking at it? The answer is no, the quality is not dependant on colour or thickness.
A colostrum refractometer (with a scale of 0-32 % BRIX) can be used to indirectly test the quality of colostrum, a reading of 22% or more indicates high quality colostrum (i.e. > 50 g/L). The percentage of BRIX, represents the fraction of sucrose in a liquid, the percentage of soluble dry matter.
Automatic Temperature Compensation gives reliable results between +10°C and +30°C.
Fast & Easy to Use. Just a couple of drops of colostrum gives a reading in seconds.
Better Calf Outcomes. Helps reduce risk of scour, pneumonia and supports passive immunity transfer.

HOW TO USE A COLOSTRUM REFRACTOMETER

Calibrate: Using the pipette place a few drops of clean water on the prism, close the cover and look through the eyepiece. Adjust the calibration screw until the reading shows 0% Brix.
Colostrum should be thawed if necessary.
Test the colostrum: Clean and dry the prism, then using the pipette place a few drops of well-mixed colostrum onto the prism surface.
Take the reading: Close the cover, point the refractometer towards a light source and read the % Brix value through the eyepiece.
Interpret the result: Higher % Brix = higher antibody content. As a guide, 22% Brix or higher indicates good-quality colostrum for feeding calves.
